Abstract

This chapter describes career planning and transition for students with disabilities in New Zealand. It begins by describing the policy contexts in which current practices have developed, and then traces the way that thinking has changed concerning the purposes of education, the nature of work, and the expectations for people with disability. These changes have shaped policies and practices in career planning and guidance. The chapter goes on to outline guiding principles or standards for good transition and career planning for these students. These are followed by a description of how the transition is positioned in New Zealand education and schools, with particular reference to a secondary school transition service in one major city.
