Abstract

Careers at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUI) are exciting and present a rewarding opportunity for faculty to combine diverse interests in education with research. Faculty who chose this path as a career face a challenge in balancing teaching, research and service. This panel discussion brings together mid‐career and experienced faculty from private/independent and public institutions to discuss critical factors in choosing a PUI career and well‐established approaches for being successful as an undergraduate faculty. The discussion will include common themes of: how to prepare and be competitive for a PUI position, transitioning from a post doc into a teaching‐rich environment, aligning teaching with research to be more efficient and productive, approaching research with undergraduates, and working with administrators and find mentors to support your career. Students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty are welcomed to participate in the discussion. Supported by the Council for Undergraduate Research and Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
