Abstract

The role of sales and marketing is crucial to the success of lodging properties. Yet, little research has focused on hotel sales and marketing professionals. This study examined the career paths of 103 sales and marketing managers and directors from 103 hotels across the United States. Career entry points were examined as well as future career plans for the sample. While most sales and marketing professionals plan to remain in that functional area, 45.3% of the sample planned to leave the hotel industry altogether in the next six to ten years. Quality of life issues were most often cited for the anticipated career changes.
