Abstract

1. The feasibility of carburizing with an oxy-acetylene flame has been confirmed. 2. A carburized case of 0.8–1.0 mm can be obtained in 20 to 30 min. at 1050–1100°C by this method. 3. The effects of overheating caused by high temperature carburizing can be completely eliminated by subsequent normalizing. 4. Carburizing with an oxy-acetylene flame enables a) to shorten the duration of carburizing by a factor of 15 to 20 compared with ordinary carburizing at 920°C; b) to conduct selective carburizing; c) eliminate expensive and bulky equipment such as furnaces, induction heaters, etc., d) incorporate carburizing into the flow of mechanical processing; c) conduct carburizing at any machine repair shop.
