Abstract

The carbonylation of ethylene with CO using aliphatic, alicyclic or amomatic amines as the medium, in the presence of the salts of certain transition metals, proceeds at 200–250‡ and an initial pressure of 100 atm for the 1∶1 CO-C2H4 mixture to give the corresponding propionic acid N-substituted amide in a yield of up to 70 mole % when based on the amine taken for reaction.
