Abstract

Carbon linings in the hearth and well have proved themselves in practice in the U.S.A. At present the accepted thickness of the hearth is 2–2.2 m, and the structure is built in three courses of blocks 700–750 mm thick, and up to 2.1 m long, wedged with round blocks diameter 100–114 mm. Carbon linings of the well are made with blocks of two courses or with brick (230 · 150 mm) pressed to the plate coolers: the total thickness of the well walls is 750–800 mm.
