Abstract
A man, 32 years of age and of at least average native intelligence, consequent to a suicidal attempt suffered a carbon monoxide poisoning. After an initial phase characterized by unconsciousness and a neurological picture indicative of decerebrate rigidity and by the absence of gross pathology in the EEG, slow restitution set in which, 4 years after the accident, left the patient intellectually reduced to the level of imbecility. In addition, considerable losses in various functional areas resulted which led to the production of a global picture of an organic dementia. Some theoretical aspects have been discussed.
