Abstract

Carbon fiber is a polymer with wide variety of applications and had gained a lot of recognition in the Engineering field for its unique properties. Carbon fiber is used in many industries such as aerospace, automotive, military, medical etc. In medical field carbon fiber can be used as a reinforcement for the manufacturing of orthopaedic implant. Carbon fibers are often mixed with other materials like matrices, resin or hardeners to form a composite which enhances its properties. The goal of this research is to study about laminated CFRP composite structures that have been exposed to mechanical loads as well as evaluation of initial design. Lamination sequence, Orientation of fiber is of great importance while synthesizing a composite. Formulas used to estimate the properties are presented. Relationship between force, moments, midplane strain and curvature are determined. Theoretical optimization of composite is conducted. Abaqus models of the composites are also presented. Some of the numerical results obtained are demonstrated.
