Abstract

The neutron capture cross-section resonance (6.7 ev) of U/sup 238/ was studied in a uranium metal foil and a sample of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in order to detect the predicted effects of recoilless emission and of crystalline binding. The studies were carried out at room, liquid nitrogen, and liquid helium temperatures; and the resonances were compared with both the gas and Debye crystal models. The resonance of the uraniurn foil at 297 deg K agrees well with the gas model, whereas that at 4.3 deg K is displaced towand the lower energies relative to the gas model and agrees better with the Debye medel. The resonances of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ at 297 and 97 deg K disagree with both models. (D.L.C.)
