Abstract

The continuous demand of carbon dioxide emission peak and neutralization requires renewable energy like wind and solar to rapidly develop in recent and future years. However, high penetration of wind and photovoltaic units in the power system not only bring up the renewable energy accommodation stress, but also cause the safety and stable operation problem to the system. In order to maximally promote the wind and solar energy consumption and reduce the energy curtailment, energy storage that can temporarily stores wind and solar energy are introduced into the power system. Energy storage system is aiming to reduce the intermittence and fluctuation of renewable energy generation, most importantly, improve the flexibility of the power system. This study firstly proposed a power and capacity configuration method of energy storage system for improving renewable energy accommodation considering both renewable energy output characteristic and economic factors. Secondly, several operation strategies of energy storage reducing renewable energy curtailment are investigated. Finally, a case study based on the real load curves and power system unit structure of certain area verifies the energy storage capacity allocation method with improvement of renewable energy consumption and flexibility of power system.
