Abstract

Anti-Id antibodies (anti-Id Ab) may be valuable in the induction of antitumor activity. Anti-Id antibodies supply a source of tumor associated antigens that stimulate the immune system to carry out an antitumoral effect. Anti-Id antibodies can activate specific T-helper cells that play a role in the response toward the tumor. This chapter discusses animal studies based on demonstration of resistance to tumor challenge after immunization with anti-Id antibodies. Studies in patients with advanced malignant diseases have failed to produce major clinical responses, but some tumor regression did occur. The promising results in several cases may serve a solid base for further investigation regarding efficacy of this modality. Future perspective is to synthesize a polyclonal anti-Id antibody vaccine for high-risk patients to prevent the development or the spread of cancer.
