Abstract
Introduction: Stroke and cancer are among the most frequent causes of mortality in the elderly and may coexist. Stroke will result in further severe disability in cancer patients, and the presence of a preexistent or occult cancer increases the prevalence of stroke. Method: We present a case of metastatic breast cancer presenting as acute multiple vascular territory stroke. Discussion: Underlying cancer may result in an ischemic stroke through many mechanisms which include modification of the coagulation cascade, mucin production by the cancer cells, nonbacterial endocarditis with embolism, and infections. The treatment of acute ischemic stroke in patients with cancer is not essentially different from that in patients without cancer. The presence of cancer is not an absolute contraindication for intravenous thrombolysis and not for mechanical thrombectomy. We present a case of metastatic breast cancer presenting as acute multiple vascular territory stroke.
