Abstract
The Gaza Strip is a region of the occupied Palestinian territory, a lower-middle-income country bordered by Egypt, Israel, and the Mediterranean Sea. About 2 million Palestinians occupy an area of 360 km2, making it one of the most densely populated regions in the world, with a reported infant mortality rate of 15–22 per 1000 livebirths and a life expectancy of more than 70 years. The unemployment rate is higher than 40%, and peaked at 80% in 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. About half of the population is aged 18 years or younger, compared with the global median age of 28 years.
