Abstract

• We analyse the impact of a phosphorus (P) surplus quota on the performances of fattening pig farms. • Results show that a P quota policy is needed to tackle the P surplus from fattening pig farms. • P-surplus quota of 4.35 kg/ha/year and 0 kg/ha/year reduce farm gross margin up to 5.75% and 14.57%, respectively. • The impact of the P-surplus quota on gross margin is less if a manure market exists or the farms use a more efficient feed in the animal diet.
