Abstract

It is argued that indices purporting to measure the extent of cerebral lateralization of a task or function are not based on any foundation and therefore give a false sense of quantification of the underlying cerebral factors. The use of between-subject comparisons of laterality is thus regarded with great caution and certain procedures are recommended for analysing laterality data. An overestimation of the capacity of current laterality paradigms, and the lack of strong theory and understanding of hemispheric processes are seen to be the main reasons for this state of affairs.
