Abstract

When relative weight response was plotted against carbon number, a straight line was not obtained for the methyl esters of C14 to C22 saturated and C18 unsaturated fatty acids in any gas chromatographic systems tested. The detectors used were β-ionization and hydrogen flame ionization. In every case weight correction terms were required to obtain quantitative gas chromatographic analysis. It is concluded that calibration of the instrument must be carried out for all fatty acid methyl esters to be measured to insure quantitative gas chromatographic analysis.
