Abstract
Question b It is recommended that women planning pregnancy should take folic acid before conception to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Women with no family history of neural tube defect and who do not have coeliac disease, diabetes mellitus, or sickle-cell anaemia, or take antiepileptic medicines, are considered to be low risk and should take a daily dose of 400 μg of folic acid (Joint Formulary Committee, 2012). It is recommended that this dose should be continued until week 12 of pregnancy. ■ If Lesley takes folic acid as recommended for the 9 weeks before she conceives and the 12 weeks after, how many tablets would she have taken? ■ How much folic acid, expressed as milligrams, would this equate to?
