Abstract
Background: Starting in 2003/2004, Payment by Results allowed a hospital to claim for healthcare costs (tariff based); however, some drugs were disproportionate to the activity and needed to be claimed separately. This introduced additional activity for staff. aims: The aim was to introduce a means to calculate these costs but not at the expense of either taking time away from current activities or increasing staff. Methods: The method was to automate the process by developing an Artificial Member of Staff using software. Findings: The introduction of the Artificial Member of Staff has been accuracy and repetition in the calculation of costs; a significant reduction in processing time and the ability to quality assure the results as both the process and the costs can be accurately tracked. Conclusion: The Artificial Member of Staff has had a significant impact. The Artificial Member of Staff has not only reduced overall processing time, but has also reduced the need to recruit more staff members.
