Abstract

In France, observational studies underline that daily intakes for calcium and magnesium are often lower than recommended daily values. To counteract inadequate calcium or magnesium status it is recommended to give priority to food and beverage rich in these minerals rather than to prescribe pharmaceutical supplements. Some natural mineral waters have high contents of calcium or magnesium. Water matrix does not slow down mineral absorption and several studies concluded that calcium and magnesium from natural mineral waters are well bioavailable. High-calcium and high-magnesium waters can thus be considered as a solution to increase calcium and magnesium intakes like foods rich in these nutrients.
