Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine calcium intake and to identify possible barriers to calcium consumption among low-income African-American women in southwestern Louisiana. Assessment of dietary calcium intake and demographic factors associated with calcium consumption were identified. In addition, the respondents' knowledge of the relationship between calcium and certain disease states were investigated. The study utilized a convenience sample consisting of 89 African-American women in and around Lafayette, Louisiana. Results suggested that calcium intake for African-American women were below the ADA recommended levels. In addition, there was an apparent deficiency in knowledge of potential food sources of calcium, and most respondents were not aware of the relationship between chronic low calcium intakes and related medical conditions.
