Abstract
Vasodilators called calcium antagonists were initially developed as anti-anginal drugs. However, at present, they are also used in the treatment of hypertension, some sort of arrhythmias, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovasospasm, etc. Quite recently, calcium antagonists have been shown to prevent atherogenesis in cholesterol-fed rabbits and arterial calcinosis produced by aging or various interventions in rats. Calcium antagonists have also been shown to potentiate cytotoxicity of some anti-tumor agents in vitro and in vivo. These predict a new era for calcium antagonists not only as therapeutic agents but as research objectives.
