Abstract

Calcaneal apophysitis, also known as Sever's disease, is a prevalent overuse injury primarily affecting young athletes. It is characterized by heel pain and results from inflammation of the developing heel's growth plate. Tenderness upon palpation of the heel and potential calcaneal apophysis fragmentation on radiographs aid diagnosis. Distinguishing Sever's disease from conditions such as Achilles tendinopathy, bursitis, stress fractures, and other musculoskeletal issues is crucial for accurate management. Various approaches address Sever's disease, including stretching, strengthening exercises, ice application, and orthotics. While self-limiting, it can cause significant discomfort. Young athletes can expect favorable outcomes, typically resuming pain-free activities within weeks.
