Abstract
The argument for and against caesarean section performed at a woman's request in the absence of a medical indication has always been a source of extensive debate in the media and the medical professions. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published an updated version of its guidance on caesarean section which includes suggestions on how to respond to a woman's request for caesarean section, including offering operative delivery to those who want it. This article aims to explore recent research findings, in conjunction with the new guidance, and assess the impact these may have on current practice.
