Abstract

Following an introduction the paper will give a brief description of the computer facilities available to the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at UMIST. Subsequent sections of the paper will deal with our experience in teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate levels including the development through projects, dissertations and by research of powerful applications programs. Special short courses for practising engineers which have been run by the department will then be discussed. Many of the departmental programs have significant practical applications, for instance, their use in the design and construction of suspension bridges (Humber, Westerschelde); some commercial uses will be presented. Finally, concluding comments and future departmental developments will be given.
