Abstract

We have performed three-dimensional linear stability analyses for natural convection in horizontal concentric annuli. A constant heat flux is given at the inner cylinder, while the outer cylinder surface is maintained a constant temperature. We calculate the critical Rayleigh numbers where a basic two-dimensional convection loses its stability with respect to three-dimsnional disturbances, and show the transition lines against the aspect ratio of the annuli. In addition, PIV measurement from the flow visualization images is carried out to confirm the results obtained from the linear stability analyses.
