Abstract

Starting salaries for this year's class of graduating chemists and chemical engineers moved up 6% from 1968 levels (C&EN, Nov. 18, 1968, page 76). Starting salaries of chemists with less than a year of practical work experience before graduation increased 5.1% from last year. Chemical engineers, as usual, did somewhat better with a 6.6% increase. Behind such increases, however, stood a shaky job market for these beginning professionals. The highest proportion of graduates in the history of ACS's starting salary surveys (4%) reported this year that they were unable to find jobs after graduation. Such information is reinforced by the experience of the Society's employment aids—the National Employment Clearing House and classified ads in C&EN. Heading the salary progression parade in chemistry this year were women graduates with a B.S. degree.
