Abstract
Despite a tightening job market, changes in the Selective Service rules, and a continuing concern about the Vietnam crisis, 1968 starting salaries in the chemical profession went up at about the same prodigious rate as they did in 1967. In addition, few graduates this year reported to ACS that they were unemployed. Overall, chemists improved their position of a year ago by about 6.27c Chemical engineers did somewhat better, with an 8.0% gain. Among chemists participating in this year's ACS starting salary survey, B.S. graduates with less than one year's work experience gained the most. Their 1967 median monthly starting salary of $650 increased to $700 this year, for a 7.7% increase. Ph.D.'s did somewhat less well. Their median monthly starting salary was $1128, up 4.9% from the 1967 figure of $1075. Masters had a 3.2% gain from $775 last year to $800 this year.
