Abstract

The status of bus rapid transit (BRT) projects at different stages of implementation in 10 Indian cities, is reviewed. BRT was first proposed for Delhi in 1996 and detailed designs produced in 2003-4. Nine other cities have also begun planning and parts of systems are now operational in Delhi, Pune and Ahmedabad. The design of bus lanes, bus stops, fare collection systems, pedestrian access, tracks for cycles and rickshaws, and parking for rickshaws and motorcycles in the different cities is outlined.
