Abstract

The third and final survey of the urban cultural heritage m the Buldan (Denizli} pilot region was carried out between August 31 and September 14, 2003. During the work conducted in 2001. 2002 and 2003, covering the documentation of the urban cultural heritage of Buldan, a total of 1431 inventory forms have been filled out and more than 9000 photographs of the settlements and monuments taken. The inventory forms were rested m 2001 and 2002. and then minor revisions were made and time usage and efficiency conditions were determined. Thanks to available equipment and experienced staff, our objectives were attained and the survey was completed in 2003. Most of the areas surveyed in 2003 are within the urban limits and a great number of them are located on steep slopes It was observed that architectural quality declined in these pherperal areas. Most of the buildings dating to the early Turkish Republic period are m the flat area where the new settlement is located We began surveying these buildings last year and it was observed that the pre-Republic traditional construction techniques were still being used in these buildings In 2003 the Buldan cemetery area was also included in the survey. The historical Anlar Cemetery, located on the heights to the north of the city, where we find mostly Ottoman period tombstones, reflects the transition from the Ottoman to the Republic period quite well. The fact that some tombstones have inscriptions both in Arabic and Latin script, can be considered a concrete indication of this transition. The main objective of the Buldan urban cultural heritage inventory survey prepared within the framework of the TOBA-TUKSEK project has been to test the applicability of inventory forms prepared by Istanbul work groups in the documentation of urban cultural heritage. This inventory has suffered the difficulties of being a first project, however, we can say that after the last updating, it has become a system that can be adapted to most settlements in Turkey.
