Abstract

Although the economy is booming and the jobless rate has dramatically declined, there are too many American children who are suffering. Daily contact with underprivileged children and their families is a constant reminder of the deplorable circumstances under which they live. It is this firsthand knowledge that is often not fully accounted for during policy making and program development. For nurses working directly with children and families, issues related to unhealthy child development become abundantly clear.
