Abstract

Smart cities are urban areas that leverage fourth industrial revolution technologies and stakeholder governance to address urban challenges and enhance the well-being of citizens. Despite the evolving concept of smart cities, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on the overall trajectory of smart city research and key issues. Thus, this investigation examines smart city literature published from 2011 to 2020 to identify trends, characteristics, and propose future research directions. A systematic review of smart city studies conducted over the past decade was performed, dividing the research into methodology and content. The analysis framework encompassed research year, two research methodologies employed, research objectives, data collection methods, utilization of research outcomes, relevant keywords, analysis units, and classification criteria for smart city security. The findings of this study are anticipated to offer valuable insights for forthcoming smart city development initiatives.
