Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides an introduction to budgeting and accounting in the context of field trials. It is written for non-specialists, such as Principal Investigators or trial managers. Preparing a good trial budget is critical to the success of a trial. If the budget is excessive the funder may reject the proposal, yet if it is inadequate it may not be possible to complete the trial successfully, or quality may be compromised. A good budget starts from a comprehensive list of all the trial’s requirements, from personnel to indirect costs to the institution(s) hosting the trial. The basic principles of accounting are explained, including steps to minimize “leakage” of funds and fraud. The importance of budget monitoring - keeping track of expenditure relative to budget - is stressed, and the basic principles and importance of auditing are explained. A simple glossary of terms is also included.
