Abstract

The delivery via buccal route of small molecules as well as large molecules has been a catching administration route and it was extensively studied over the last few periods. Such administration route has the ability to by-pass first pass metabolism and they can be utilized for delivering various therapeutic drugs, they can directly enter the systemic circulation. However, an efficient form of dosage for delivering drugs is known as buccal films because they provide comfort to patients, they’re portable as well as quite simple to use. Traditionally, buccal films have been prepared by utilizing some techniques that are quite conventional for instance solvent casting method and hot melt extrusion. Nevertheless, latest techniques have been exploited for enhancing delivery of biologics as well as small molecules. In this article, I have discussed anatomy of the oral mucosa, benefits as well as drawbacks of buccal films, various considerations while making a formulation of buccal films for instance active pharmaceutical ingredients, flavoring agents, coloring agents, saliva stimulating agents etc., and several techniques for preparation of buccal films, evaluation characteristics and therapeutic applications of buccal films. This comprehensive review provides data for designing a mucoadhesive buccal film-based drug delivery system from literature directly into research and commercial market.
