Abstract
Bandwidth and gain are very important parameters in the design of compact multiband microstrip patch antennas. In this manuscript, we demonstrate ways to improve the bandwidth and gain performance of microstrip patch antennas by embedding split ring resonators in their structures. These metamaterial elements are artificially materials with unusual engineered properties not found in nature. In particular, we have used multiple corrugated split ring resonators as metamaterial building blocks embedded in the microstrip patch antenna geometry. The return loss and radiation pattern of the proposed multiband compact antennas is calculated. Broadband performance is obtained combined with high gain for several of the proposed patch antenna configurations. The presented compact multiband antenna designs will be applicable to C-Band long-distance radio telecommunication networks.
