Abstract

A three-day conference of 12 British and 14 American radiologists was held in London in June, 1970, under the auspices of the Ciba Foundation. The topic was “The Future of Diagnostic Radiology”. The meeting was also attended by an observer from the Department of Health and Social Security of the United Kingdom. All participants were university-associated radiologists. While discussing the future of diagnostic radiology in general, academic aspects were stressed particularly. One day of the meeting was devoted to the clinical direction of diagnostic radiology, with a discussion of new areas of usefulness and uses, discussions of subspecialities and the use of other modalities such as ultrasound, nuclear medicine, thermography, and their general relationship to röntgenology. On the second day, directions and priorities of research in diagnostic radiology were discussed, as well as the teaching of radiology at all levels, from undergraduate to continuing education. On the last day, discussions encompassed retrieval and dissemination of information, and staffing and funding of academic departments.
