Abstract

Conventional historiography presents the British withdrawal from east of Suez in 1968 as economically inevitable. Instead, this paper will argue that the British withdrawal was a political choice in order that domestic social spending could be maximised. This fresh perspective shows that far from having a diminished international role forced upon it, the British government consciously chose such an option.
