Abstract

The authors report on crystal properties of SrS thin films prepared by the MSD (multisource deposition) method and EL (electroluminescence) characteristics of SrS:Ce; SrS:CeCl/sub 3/; SrS:Ce, KCl; and SrS:Ce, K/sub 2/S. In particular, they have obtained bright blue light in a SrS:Ce, KCl thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) device. They have shown that SrS film with very high crystallinity can be obtained. The mechanism of crystal growth in the SrS thin film is affected not only by surface energy but also by the S/Sr supply ratio. The SrS:Ce, KCL has a luminance of 1100 cd/m/sup 2/, indicating that MSD is a very powerful method for fabricating full-color TFEL displays. The authors have also shown that Cl atoms in SrS:Ce, KCL play an important role of carrier magnification. This could lead to the full understanding of the luminescing mechanism in TFEL devices. >
