Abstract

Dancers on the cover symbolize the bright green and red triboluminescence (TL) of Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes under mechanical stimuli (clapping), despite the great contrast between their photoluminescence (PL) efficiencies under UV illumination (spotlight). In article number 2203139, Yuichi Hirai and co-workers demonstrate the existence of direct lanthanide(III) excitation processes in TL, while ligand-mediated ones dominate the PL intensity. This work presents insights for fabricating a new family of lanthanide(III)-based functional mechanophores as well as providing the key to elucidate underlying mechanisms.
