Abstract

Quaker Resfarch in Progress65 Kathleen Pokstofel, a graduate student of Bryn Mawr College in the School of Social Work, is in the research stage of a Ph.D. thesis which will examine Quaker women's benevolent societies in the Philadelphia area. * * * Clyde A. Milner II of Utah State University History Department is preparing a biographical study of Albert Smiley as one part of a six-part set of biographical essays, "Churchmen and the Western Indians, 1848-1920." These essays will be presented first at a conference at Utah State University , Logan, Utah, August 5-7, 1982. His article, "Off the White Road: Seven Nebraska Societies in the 1870s," appeared in Western Hbtorical Quarterly, vol. 12, no. 1, Jan. 1981. * # * Dr. Dorothy Gaus of Potomac, Maryland, has been doing research on the activities of the White and Nicholson families in North America over three centuries. She is also preparing materials on the Bacon and Culpepper Rebellions in the American colonies in the 1670s. BRIEFER NOTICES Prepared by John and Barbara Curtis The annual meeting of the Friends Historical Association was held on Monday, November 9, 1981 at the Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia . After a pleasant dinner in the East Room the group of some eighty members and guests gathered in the monthly meeting room to conduct die business of the association. John M. Moore, president, presided at the presentation of the minutes of last year's annual meeting and the reading of reports from standing committees, the treasurer and the auditors. John Moore gave a brief review of new publications in 1981 of interest and value to Quaker historians. The main address was given by David A. Fraser, until recently Associate Librarian at Haverford College Library and joint editor with Edwin B. Bronner of the forthcoming Volume 5 of The Papers of William Penn. This is one of five books either published or in preparation by a group working under the auspices of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania , Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania in a comprehensive project to publish all of William Penn's writings. David Fraser outlined some of the scholarly problems facing the editors as they worked with the 140 published works produced in die 17th and 18th century by the prolific author, William Penn. Many of these titles were unsigned and frequently die printers remained anonymous. * * * Preparations are well in hand for the Fourth Conference of Quaker Historians and Archivists which will be held June 25-27, 1982, at Guilford College, Greensboro, NC. Barbara Curtis, convenor, and Jack D. Marietta, coordinator of the program, have arranged for presentation of several papers in four major sessions. As at earlier conferences, one or two responders will consider each paper and dien the session will be open to comments from 66Quaker History all those present. One of the four sessions will be devoted specifically to the work of the various Quaker archival agencies. Among those presenting papers are Kenneth L. Carroll, professor in the Department of Religion at Southern Methodist University, and Jonathan Chu, Department of History at the University of Massachusetts at Boston.» * » Another conference of interest to readers of Quaker History is one on "Quaker Life in the Hudson River Valley." This project of the Duchess County Historical Society with financial support from the New York Council for the Humanities was coordinated by Willard Moore as project director. Papers were presented at a gathering the first weekend of April, 1982, on Quaker architecture and folk art, perceptions and self-perceptions of Quakers as seen through their daily life, Quaker influence in regional economic development, and Quaker response to social problems.
