Abstract

AbstractThis chapter provides a brief introduction of sustainable public procurement, “Value for Money” concept, and its pivotal role in the emergence of sustainable procurement concept for delivering broader environmental and social objectives. It argues that dominant literature on the subject emerges from developed countries and they fail to acknowledge the fact that more than two-third countries in the world do not have supportive legislation for integrating sustainability concerns in purchasing decisions. This leaves a big void in the body of knowledge and it makes a case for bringing a book that brings out the nuances of SPP implementation challenges in a developing country context. The later sections of the chapter provide a brief account of how different chapters have been organized in the book and how these chapters complement each other in developing a nuanced understanding of sustainable procurement in the local and global contexts. Many concepts discussed in this chapter will be further elaborated and discussed in greater detail in subsequent chapters.KeywordsSustainable public procurementGreen ProcurementValue for moneyStrategic use of procurement
