Abstract

BACKGROUND: With breast reconstruction becoming increasingly more popular in the interdisciplinary treatment of breast cancer, important questions about oncological safety and possible impairments of subsequent therapy after these procedures arise. METHODS: Review on breast reconstruction and surgical oncology of breast cancer. RESULTS: While different reconstruction methods are available, which can be associated with different technical complications, the time point of reconstruction and the need for radiation or medical treatment (chemotherapy, immunotherapy or endocrine therapy) are crucial factors. From the surgical oncologist's viewpoint, we reviewed recent literature, weighing pros and cons for breast reconstruction after mastectomy due to cancer. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, management of breast cancer patients must be performed by a multidisciplinary team, including patient's needs for restoring physical integrity and providing definite oncological safety alike.
