Abstract
We write the equations of a nonlinear nonlocal elastic material in the system of Riemann invariants and view them as the perturbation of a simplified system under specific conditions that utilize a finite influence distance. For the perturbed system we study formation of singularities, a quality that passes on to the solutions of the original system.
