Abstract

The transverse magnetoresistance of the two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures in which there is a narrow constriction in the conducting channel shows remarkable new quantum effects for current densities and magnetic fields close to the region of breakdown of the dissipationless quantum Hall effect. To explain the main features of the experimental results, a model involving quasi-elastic inter-Landau-level scattering has been proposed.
