Abstract

This paper examines the brain drain that has prevailed Chinese universities since the beginning of 1990s. A case study on the impact of market economy on higher education has revealed that university teachers in the 1990s attend classes, teach, and are physically present on campus, but their real interests lie elsewhere, and most of their energy goes to other pursuits. Through the voices of university teachers, some changes in higher education have been discussed and causes to the new form of brain drain presented.
