Abstract
Aim: This study was conducted in order to evaluate treatment adherence in patients admitted to a community mental health center. Material and Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 100 patients who were registered at a community mental health center located in the city of Bartın between March and June 2016. Data were collected using by the Personal Information Form and the Medication Adherence Rating Scale. Data were evaluated using descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis tests and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: Mean age of the patients was 37.9±11.9. It was found that 54% of the patients had schizophrenia, 59% had knowledge about their medication, and 92% took their medication themselves. Among the patients, 66% of them attended the community mental health center a few days per week and 53% attended for more than 2 years. Mean of the medication adherence score was 7.96 ±1.78 and 69% of the patients showed high treatment adherence. Medication adherence did not significantly differ according to age, gender, marital status, illness, and frequency of attending the community mental health center (p>0.05). In this study, it was found that patients who were employed, had knowledge about their medication, and took their medication themselves showed significantly higher treatment adherence (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that patients followed up at the community mental health center had above moderate levels of treatment adherence. Referring patients to community mental health center’s, activating rehabilitation and psychoeducation services which include informing patients about their illness and treatment, and thus supporting patients in terms of getting employed would increase adherence.
