Abstract
Celebrating 50 years of NHS midwifery, the Royal College of Midwives held its 116th Annual Conference at the Bournemouth International Centre on the sunny south coast. Unlike the turbulent and stormy waters of last year's conference in Harrogate, the Council managed to steer a more steady course. In fact, under the skillful and often humourous directions of Jane Todd, the Chairman of the Council, the 700 delegates were made to feel at ease and a spirit of enthusiasm and encouragement appeared to be the order of the day.
