Abstract

The concept of stress in continuum mechanics was introduced to characterize the internal forces. In classical elasticity the stress tensor is symmetric. However, there occur large stress gradients in the stress concentration in the vicinity of holes, near notches and cracks. In this case we must take consideration of the influence of the micro — structure of the continuum in question. Consequently, we need the improved or generalized theory based on the influence of the micro — structure. [1]–[5] Such theory is called the Cosserat theory of elasticity theory, asymmetric elasticity or couple stress elasticity.
