Abstract

When I left The Wall Street Journal in 1972, I figured my newspaper days were over. I had just turned forty, I had been a reporter for the bourgeois press for fifteen years, and I was eager to get started on a new life of teaching and freelance writing. I taught journalism part-time at Columbia University in New York and then moved to Washington to teach it full-time at American University.
