Abstract
Abstract The analysis of borehole breakouts may yield good data on the in situ stress field if properly applied. It has already been proven useful and particularly applicable to the activity of a petroleum engineer. Conditions for obtaining reliable data are discussed, together with the difficulty of estimating accurate magnitudes from a similar analysis. For petroleum engineering analyses, four main classes have been identified. They are briefly illustrated with actual cases. Some numerical data on several stress fields analyzed by this method are also given.
