Dynamic capabilities and sustainability performance: Exploring the moderating role of environmental dynamism in the Norwegian fishing industry
  • Mar 15, 2023

  • Magoti Daniel Harun + 2 more

This study examines the effect of dynamic capabilities (DCs) on economic performance (ECOP), social performance (SOP), and environmental performance (ENVP) under different levels of environmental dynamism (EnvD). Based on preliminary interviews and survey data collected from Norwegian fishing firms, the analysis was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modeling and necessary conditions analysis. The results show that firms that acquire a set of DCs are more likely to improve their economic, social, and environmental sustainability performance. More so, firms' economic performance is a necessary condition for social performance, but not for ENVP. Interestingly, the results show that the effect of DCs on economic and environmental sustainability performance is even stronger when the level of EnvD is higher. However, EnvD does not have a significant effect on the relationship between DCs and social sustainability performance. Our findings provide guidance to managers on how and when to invest in and leverage DCs to improve sustainability performance in the food industry.

  • Apeksha Garg + 1 more

This study looks at how logistics companies’ economic, social, and environmental performance is affected by inbound and outbound green logistics (IGL and OGL) strategies. The results show that both IGL and OGL greatly improve sustainability outcomes, especially when it comes to the economic and environmental aspects. The measurement model’s constructs all meet the acceptable Cronbach Alpha level of 0.70, demonstrating great internal consistency as well as superior reliability and validity. Moreover, CR and AVE values indicate the model’s robustness, while model fit indices such as Chi-square/df (1.681), GFI (0.898), TLI (0.945), CFI (0.956), and RMSEA (0.056) confirm that the model fits the data well. According to hypothesis testing, IGL has a minor but significant impact on economic performance, while having a positive impact on social and environmental performance. On the other hand, OGL has no discernible influence on social performance but has a considerable beneficial impact on economic and environmental performance. These results highlight both the need for more research into the potential social benefits of OGL in the logistics sector and the significance of green logistics in boosting sustainability in logistics firms.

  • Hari Govind Mishra + 2 more

The paper aims to understand the relation of customer relationship management (CRM) stages on the belief about sustainable performance, along with brand images and values as moderating factors and covariates. CRM stages have positive effect on SCP, and cause negative effect on social and environmental performance. The individual values give more preference for initiation and maintenance relationships then social values, and values do not show any significant relation with termination. Values also have moderate positive effect on beliefs. So, its moderating affect along with CRM stages indicates that social values affect only social and environmental performance either with initiation or maintenance. While individual values affect only economic performance either with initiation or maintenance. Brand images also moderated with CRM stages, to evaluate brand affect, which indicates that social brand image strongly effect on economic, social and environmental performance, rather than sensory brand image moderating effect on economic and social performance only.

Interdependence among dimensions of sustainability
  • Apr 9, 2018
  • Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal
  • Sandeep Kumar Gupta + 1 more

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the interdependence among dimensions of sustainability, i.e. economic, social and environmental performance, this study focuses on leading states of the Indian leather Industry.Design/methodology/approachThis study followed exploratory research where partial least square (PLS) based structural equation modeling has been used. The states have been selected based on judgmental sampling. The study used unit level data for the leading states of Indian leather Industry − namely, Tamil Nadu (TN), West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The study has used Annual Survey of Industry data from 2007-2008 to 2011-2012. The proposed hypotheses have been tested using WarpPLS 5.0 software.FindingsThe structural equation analysis of unit-wise leather industry data supports a significant bi-directional negative relationship between social performance and economic performance among all the selected states. In contrast, the relationship between economic performance and environmental performance, as expected and supported by many existing theories, has shown a bidirectional positive relationship. However, the relationship between social and environmental performance has shown quite mysterious and mixed trends. TN has depicted significantly negative coefficients, which could be attributed to higher pressure for environmental compliance that might have led to a trade-off between the two to gain cost competitiveness.Research limitations/implicationsUnavailability of data for many critical indicators is the biggest limitation of this study.Originality/valueThe sustainability framework proposed in this work is an original contribution of authors to the existing literature. Moreover, this study on the Indian leather industry fills the gap and resolves the mystery of interconnection among the dimensions of sustainability.

  • Mohammed Masum Billah + 5 more

PurposeThe survival and growth of the ready-made garments (RMGs) sectors in Bangladesh depend on sustainable supply chain performance (SSCP). The purpose of this study is to analyse the effects of Internet of Things (IoT), supply chain collaboration and ethical sensitivity on SSCP. Also, supply chain dynamism was tested as a moderator.Design/methodology/approachThe framework of this study has been developed to enrich the understanding of technology usage in the supply chain. In developing the framework, previous studies in the supply chain context were considered. The model was tested by using data collected from 290 executives that were employed by different RMG companies in Bangladesh. This study used a 29-item structured questionnaire measured on a 6-point Likert scale to collect the data. Covariance-based structural equation modelling (SEM) was utilised to test the data.FindingsThe results showed that there were statistically significant and positive relationships between IoT and supply chain collaboration, social performance, economic performance and environmental performance. Ethical sensitivity also influenced social and economic performance. Supply chain collaboration was found to be related to social, economic and environmental performance. However, no link was found between ethical sensitivity and environmental performance. The result also showed that supply chain dynamism acted as a moderator.Research limitations/implicationsBy considering theories and interpreting the results, this study provides some theoretical and practical implications which will enhance the SSCP. The results can also facilitate strategic planning by companies.Originality/valueThis research has identified and analysed the effect of IoT on SSCP in the RMGs industry in Bangladesh where this industry serves as the main economic contributor.

Using Social Enterprises for Social Policy in South Korea: Do Funding and Management Affect Social and Economic Performance?
  • Feb 1, 2017
  • Public Administration and Development
  • Tae Hyung Kim + 1 more

SummaryThis study examines the way the South Korean government utilizes social enterprises as a policy alternative to promote employment and provide social services for the socially disadvantaged. As an example of “capable policy design” characterized as high levels of instrumentality and government capacity, this study focuses more specifically on the social and economic performance of Korean social enterprises. Using the Korea Social Enterprise Data, this study conducts an empirical analysis to identify how government subsidies and management quality affect the social and economic performance of social enterprises. The results show that government subsidies partially contribute to the enhancement of the enterprises' social performance and economic performance. There are mixed results regarding the effect of management quality on the social and economic performance of social enterprises. The results also suggest that general donations from citizens along with government subsidies help social enterprises pursue social performance particularly in employment of socially disadvantaged people, while corporate donations promote the provision of social services. This suggests that government subsidy is an important instrument in the birth and growth of social enterprises as well as the social and economic performance of social enterprises but should be complemented by corporate and general donations to sustain both social and economic performance in the long run. • SocioEconomic Challenges
  • Abdalla Dewan + 2 more

Although there is a growing interest in socially driven Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and their importance for developing countries, there is still a lack of understanding of the importance of social value orientation (SVO) and social entrepreneurial orientation (SEO) and their contribution to organizational performance. The objectives of this research are to investigate the impact of social entrepreneurial orientation and social value orientation on organizational social and economic performance. The methodology used in this research is based on quantitative analysis by using a questionnaire to gather the required data. Structural equation model analyses (SEM) using AMOS software were used to analyze the data. The main conclusions drawn from this study are the direct effect between social value orientation and organizational performance (economic performance, social performance) is statistically significant, and the direct effect between social entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance (economic performance, social performance) is statistically significant. The findings of this research have several implications for the development of socially driven small and medium enterprises: First, it highlights the importance of SVO and SEO in the success of socially driven SMEs, demonstrating that these orientations can positively impact organizational social and economic performance. Furthermore, the findings of this research serve as a basis for further research into the impact that SVO and SEO have on organizational performance and can provide guidance for academics, policymakers and practitioners. Finally, this research can also be used to inform the development of strategies and policies to promote the growth of socially driven SMEs in developing countries.
